A new study by leading extra-marital dating site IllicitEncounters.com has revealed that women are more likely to look for an affair in order to fulfil physical desires, whilst men are looking to make deep emotional connections.
The results of the study show that 72% of the 5,789 female members questioned joined the site because they were unsatisfied with the level of physical intimacy they received in their relationship. Surprisingly, the majority of the 4,326 men questioned (68%) were looking for an emotional or intellectual connection with an illicit lover, rather than just a purely physical one.
Spokesperson for IllicitEncounters.com, Mike Taylor said: “People who join Illicit Encounters are all looking for that something missing from their current relationship. For some – the physical side of the relationship is no longer satisfying, for others it’s a total breakdown in communication, while many are craving an intellectual counterpart. The interesting result of this survey is that it’s women who are motivated to join due to of a lack of physical intimacy with their partner, rather than a lack of an emotional connection – whereas classically it’s the guys who are viewed as sexually more driven. The roles of females in society have, and still are, massively evolving, and I think this study is only the tip of the iceberg in that sense.”
One female member, Sophia, from London, commented: “I joined the website after my relationship broke down with my husband and he was no longer attracted to me. We still get on great as friends and I am not looking to replace him, but I also need to feel wanted and sexually desirable for my self-confidence and personal needs.”
Representatives of the website suggest the findings are a reflection on changing lifestyles and attitudes – that women today are more independent and proactive, while men are more in tune and open about their mental needs.
The website, which was established in 2003, provides introduction opportunities for like-minded married and attached people looking for a little romance outside their current relationship. Whether that’s the occasional bit of flirtatious chat, a regular coffee date, or a full-blown affair, that’s up to them.
