Time to stock up on anal toys? Study reveals 36% of British men have enjoyed bum fun

To mark the reintroduction of the We-Vibe Vector+ vibrating prostate massager in two new colours – charcoal black and cobalt blue – Lovehoney commissioned a study which revealed that 36% of British men had tried anal sex and liked it, although 34% were unaware that the prostate is an erogenous zone.

The firm also says that when it comes to anal sex, men often see themselves only in the giving role and feel insecure or ashamed about exploring anal stimulation for their own pleasure. And  deeply rooted stereotypes lead many to believe that only homosexual men engage in anal sex or prostate stimulation.

The absence of education in schools about the different erogenous zones and the lack of conversation between men perhaps explains why over two in five (41%) British men have never tried anal and have no desire to, according to the study. When asked why, the majority of men in the UK (51%) answered that they are simply not interested in trying it.

The study found that 36% of men have tried anal sex and like it. But of these, 68% said they only give anal sex but do not receive it. When those that do not receive were asked why, the second most common response was belief that ‘only homosexual men have anal sex’, with 26% saying this. In addition, one in five men (21%) said that they generally find anal sex dirty.

Volker Wittkamp, urologist and sexual wellness expert for We-Vibe, commented: “Stimulation of the prostate is often a taboo subject in heterosexual relationships, so we have to clear up a few prejudices. Yes, excrement does come out the back, but it’s usually not in the last part of the rectum. Nevertheless, especially in the beginning, it doesn’t hurt at all to clean it with an anal douche, for example. Nothing can get broken down there, but of course you should approach it carefully and slowly increase.”

The prostate is a gland about the size of a chestnut, made up of muscle tissue and located below the bladder near the erectile tissue of the urethra.

Volker Wittkamp added: “You can’t and shouldn’t force anyone to do it, but if you follow a few rules, prostate stimulation is at least an intense experience. Mostly in a positive sense.”

The study showed that although there is still a lot of hesitation amongst men when it comes to anal sex, they are curious about what prostate stimulation feels like: 32% are already using sex toys regularly, and over 20% of men are interested in trying out anal sex toys.
