A new consumer survey commissioned by Adam & Eve has found that most adults still prefer using their hands during masturbation, although sex toys continue to play a significant role in solo pleasure.
The independent survey of more than 2,000 American adults aged 18 and over found that 54% typically use their hands when masturbating, while 15.5% said they use sex toys. A further 10.5% rely on erotic media, and 5.3% said they use fantasy or imagination alone.
However, research also highlighted the impact of pleasure products, with nearly 35% of respondents who use sex toys reporting that they experience more intense orgasms during solo play than they do with a partner.
“There isn’t one right way to masturbate,” said Adam & Eve’s resident sexologist, Dr. Jenni Skyler. “For some people, their hands provide everything they need. Others enjoy the additional stimulation of a vibrator or stimulator – or the use of erotic content. The important takeaway is that masturbation is a healthy form of self-care, and people shouldn’t feel embarrassed or ashamed about it.”
The findings form part of Adam & Eve’s ongoing consumer research into sexual wellness and behaviour, offering retailers and manufacturers further insight into changing attitudes towards self-pleasure and the continued demand for products that enhance solo experiences.
