Portland TV’s Marketing Manager Claire Wigington told ETO: “Originally, because we didn’t have the UKAFTAs last year, we felt it was important to show the British industry is still strong. Television X and Red Hot are in the lucky position of still buying a lot of programming and discovering new talent and we recognised a need to have some mark of achievement by British adult performers and producers in 2009. We had so many amazing landmark shows last year, like Screwed, and since I’ve been back at Portland doing PR and marketing we’ve been talking more about the stories behind the shows.

“It started off as a purely online poll, then evolved into this giant thing. I decided we wanted actual awards to give to the winners, to make it more meaningful, so we had the awards made.”

The twelve awards resemble a golden cock and balls being held by delicate hands. Claire said: “It was when we were calling people to talk about promoting the poll on their blogs and sites that they started asking ‘when’s the awards night?’, so I set this up to get everyone together to give them out. It’s been received so well by industry people – it’s been really lovely. A few people who weren’t nominated have said nasty things on forums, but you can’t please all the people all the time!”

She continued: “Being awards voted for by the public – which is the first of its type in the UK that I know of – hopefully it’s something we can continue to do, year on year, in ‘award season’. We had around 6,000 people vote for the awards online, traffic from nominees’ blogs, links from Twitter – we were pleased with the numbers. It’s not just about stuff that was commissioned by Portland Television last year, for Television X though. While there are certain girls who do most of their work through us, we’ve not been funny about who was nominated. There are girls who do a lot of work for Playboy Group, for example, who’ve not been excluded or discriminated against for doing lots of scenes for other people. It’s a celebration of how great the talent is in this country. The producers too – Ric [Porter] shoots for everybody. It’s definitely got a broad remit. That breadth is something which I believe will, as the SHAFTAs becomes more established, allow them to rival the bigger American awards.”
