UK retailer Sextoys.co.uk and charity MS Together have seen widespread media coverage of their campaign to raise awareness of the lack of sexual health support for those with Multiple Sclerosis.
Their joint survey, which Sextoys.co.uk called “The Missing O”, revealed that a huge 97 percent of people with MS had experienced symptoms of sexual dysfunction. However, less than five percent reported receiving adequate medical advice and 16.1 percent felt that doctors dismissed or did not take their concerns seriously.
The survey revealed that most common sexual dysfunction issues experienced by those with MS included a decrease in libido (68.8 percent), fatigue impacting sexual activity (64.3 percent), decreased sensation (57.1 percent) and difficulty reaching orgasm (52.7 percent).
The campaign was supported by MS campaigner Roxy Murray, who highlighted the challenges of achieving orgasm with MS and the importance of educating the medical community to address sexual dysfunction.
In order to help with the challenges of MS, Sextoys.co.uk have put together specialised bundles of sexual wellness aids aimed at helping to achieve orgasm for users experiencing a lack of sensation. There are three – one for those with vulvas, another for penis-owners and one for couples. The brand will be donating the profits from these bundles to MS Together.
Roxy Murray said: “Healthcare providers should receive comprehensive education on MS-related sexual dysfunction and be equipped with the tools to offer real, informed advice. Sexual wellbeing plays a crucial role in mental health and in nurturing fulfilling relationships. Many people with MS report experiencing relationship stress due to these significant sexual health concerns. We are also collaborating with junior doctors at King’s College to ensure they are prepared to have inclusive, open conversations with all individuals living with MS.”
Murray also discussed how people of all genders living with MS can explore many options to enhance their sexual experiences. “Arousal creams, penis pumps, penis rings and strokers can support erection maintenance, enhance sensation, and increase sexual satisfaction,” she said. “For those experiencing reduced arousal, lubricants and arousal gels may be beneficial. If sensation is diminished, external stimulators such as toys designed for the clitoris or other erogenous zones can help activate nerve endings and enhance pleasure during both partnered intimacy and solo exploration.”
Amy Thompson, who founded MS Together, said: The more sensitive symptoms of MS are often overlooked and rarely discussed, even within the community, despite their prevalence. That’s why we’re pleased to see increasing research, surveys shedding light on the topic of sexual dysfunction.”
