“Start small” is often the first piece of advice given to anyone buying their first anal toy, but Lovense says it doesn’t tell shoppers what size is actually right for them.
“Pleasure is not one-size-fits-all. Every body is different, and every person deserves to find what fits them, not just what a label says is ‘beginner-friendly,’” said Dan Liu, CEO of Lovense. “We want people to explore with confidence, not settle for the default.”
Lovense’s research offers a snapshot of how first-time buyers currently approach sizing. While 38% said they simply chose a product labelled “small” or “beginner,” 25% relied on recommendations from others and 17% opted for multi-size sets to work out their preferences through trial and error. The findings highlight how consumers are often left to navigate sizing through broad labels, outside opinions or experimentation rather than clear, personalised guidance.
That gap becomes clearer among consumers who later felt they had chosen the wrong size. The leading reason, cited by 39%, was a lack of individual sizing recommendations, while 28% said product information was not intuitive enough to help them make an informed choice. For Lovense, the findings point to a need for more specific guidance beyond simply telling consumers to opt for the smallest size first, which is why they’ve published their Anal Toy Size Guide.
The guide groups products, including Lush Anal, Hush 2, Edge 2 and Ridge, by experience level with clear measurements for diameter and insertable length, while comparing toy sizes to familiar objects such as a lip balm, sports drink cap and golf ball to make them easier to visualise.
It also explains how shape, diameter, length and base design can affect fit, giving retailers a simple resource to help customers understand sizing and choose products with greater confidence.
