David Gold: Ann Summers chairman dies following short illness

David Gold, chairman of Ann Summers, died last week at the age of 86 following a short illness. Despite having such a prominent position in adult retail, Mr Gold was best known in the media for being co-chairman, along with David Sullivan, of football club West Ham United.

With brother Ralph, Gold bought Ann Summers in 1972, when it had four stores, but the business was transformed after daughter Jacqueline joined the firm in 1981 and introduced the concept of party plan as a route to market for adult products.
