Newcastle newsagent fined for selling porn

A Newcastle newsagent has been fined £800 and ordered to pay costs of £295 after being charged with selling hardcore DVDs in unlicensed premises. The store was raided by council officers last year, according to a report on chroniclelive.co.uk, and “more than a dozen magazines complete with films” were discovered on the shelves.

“The city council clearly has serious concerns around classified but pornographic material being sold through unlicensed shops such as this newsagent,” said Linda Hobson, deputy cabinet member for community safety and regulation for Newcastle City Council. “Laws around the classification of such material are there to protect the public and will continue to be enforced by the city Council. I applaud the efforts of our officers in ensuring that goods of this nature are only made available through establishments licensed by the city council and we will continue to work with all our partners and legitimate businesses to ensure that the law is followed.”
