Fined £400 for selling a film for a fiver

A Stranraer man who sold an unclassified pornographic film to a friend for just £5 has been fined £400 after falling foul of the 1984 Video Recordings Act. The man was targeted by police who searched his home after speaking to another man who said he had bought the film from the offender, according to the Galloway Gazette. At his home police found 50 pornography films on video and DVD which had no legal classification.

The man’s solicitor said that the man had made no great financial gain from the incident and there was no suggestion that “this type of thing” had been ongoing for any length of time.

The maximum sentence for offences under the Video Recordings Act is six months in jail or a £20,000 fine, but Sheriff Tom Millar conceded that this offence was at the lower end of the scale.
