Ann Summers survey reveals the true extent of wardrobe malfunctions in the UK

To coincide with the launch of its new Sexy Lace lingerie collection, Ann Summers conducted a survey in an attempt to discover how many British women have suffered a wardrobe malfunction – and the results indicate that 73% of the women surveyed have fallen victim to an accidental skirt tuck or bra flash, with 70% of the respondents finding it funny rather than embarrassing.

The survey also asked respondents if they would alert a stranger to their wardrobe malfunction, where would be worse to have an outfit mishap, what would be worse to accidentally flash and covers the perils of forgetting you have control pants on. The retailer also asked women to share their wardrobe malfunction stories – the results of which have been shared on Ann Summers’ latest blog post.

The survey suggested that 69% of women would alert a stranger about their wardrobe malfunction if they were unaware of it; 62% of women think the worst time to forget you have control pants on is a first date, with 38% thinking it would be worse on a windy day; 59% of women think it would be worse to have a wardrobe malfunction in the office rather than out in public; 84% of women think it would be worse to flash their thong rather than their bra; and 69% of women think it would be worse to flash control pants rather than a thong.

Some of the highlights from the wardrobe malfunction stories Ann Summers collected, which can be read here, include: “My mum pulled my tube top down to cover my stomach and my boobs popped out”, “I learnt the hard way that there is not one swimsuit in the world that can withstand the speed of a dolphin”, and the poignant “I once decided to wear a cropped top and high waisted skirt – something I haven’t done since I was 18. On this very same day I forgot to ‘do up’ my bra flaps after feeding my baby, leaving them to dangle free for all to see.”

Ros Salmon, head of lingerie buying at Ann Summers commented: “We started sharing wardrobe malfunction stories in the office when we were talking about our new Sexy Lace range. We had so many stories to share that we wanted to get the ladies of Britain involved and have picked our favourite stories to share with you. We also love how many women would have other people’s back when it comes to wardrobe malfunctions – we need to keep an eye out for each other! Funny, embarrassing, inconveniently timed – wardrobe malfunctions are never ideal, but we can at least make sure we have the best underwear on when they do happen.”

Ann Summers’ new Sexy Lace lingerie range launches on Wednesday 25th July.
